The present day "world system" makes money a commodity needed by everyone to acquire things they want. If they want to get anything, they need to provide money. 

Money is a specially designed printed paper with the mandate to be a legal tender. With money you have purchasing power. 

Money replaced the trade by barter system. If you had rice and wanted beans, give a certain quantity of rice and a certain quantity of beans will be given to you.

Thats the past, the present is about money. Bring the right amount of money and your wants will be satisfied. 

There is somewhere called the market where various products are sold and bought. Money makes the switch happen. People give services for money. 

The government alone has the power to produce money. They try to circulate it evenly. How successful they have been is my worry. People need money to survive in this day and time.
